We offer a wide variety of choices in stone materials so that you can pick out the colors best suited for your project. Being able to choose from multiple color palates and various rock textures is an important part of our construction process. As these structures serve a purpose and are undoubtedly stout by design, the majority of emphasis is put into the artistic integrity.
History of Dry stack stone construction
Dry stack stone construction is the first and oldest form of masonry stonework that is still in use today. Dry stack refers to a construction technique in which stone structures and walls are built without using mortar. These stone structures are stable because of their construction method, which is characterized by the presence of a load-bearing facade of carefully selected interlocking stones.
Some of the most iconic and oldest constructions to date were made using dry stack techniques like Machu Picchu, Inca and Mayan ruins, and countless structures, churches, walls, and terraces all over the world. Even bridges were constructed using dry stack that is still in use today. And unlike concrete, these walls can adjust to the slow but constantly moving topography that would normally stress and crack mortar permanently damaging the structural integrity. Each stone is meticulously hand chiseled from top to bottom, the sides and face to fit seamlessly with the next adjoining rock to make the tightest most structurally sound wall available. Plus the aesthetics are unmatched!
Our walls are backfilled with more stone that is puzzled behind the walls and hammered into place for ultimate structural integrity. Also, the use of rock as a backfill keeps the walls clean of weeds for that perfect look all the time. Our staircases are laid in crusher fines which is ground-up rock. Crusher fines offer superior stability in packing, are able to drain from rain and snow, and act as a weed barrier keeping them maintenance-free.
